About After Thought

After Thought is pioneering a new paradigm within AI that builds upon the progress of the last decade of deep learning by taking advantage of overlooked ideas and techniques within other areas of AI (e.g., computational cognitive science). We believe that the greatest transformative potential of AI lies within real-world applications for critical industries (e.g., healthcare, robotics, manufacturing, finance, intelligence / strategic operations, engineering design, etc.) — this potential has not yet been unlocked and it will take new ideas to realize that potential. Our mission is to originate and execute on those new ideas in order to accelerate and amplify the near-term impact of AI.

Why After Thought

You’ll be a Founding Research Scientist at an early-stage startup backed by Tier 1 investors in a market on the precipice of massive economic and technological expansion.

In this role, you'll have the chance to work with other top-tier researchers, engineers, and operators, from institutions like MIT and Harvard, on fundamental and exciting problems.

We are a mission-driven AI company. You have the chance to help trailblaze a new direction in AI research and development — one that has near-term potential to unlock the real-world, high-impact applications of AI that go far beyond the primarily consumer-focused applications of today’s technology.

We recognize the value of fundamental research — the transformative potential of AI has not yet been unlocked, and it will take new ideas to realize that potential.

We encourage out-of-the-box thinking that cuts through the current hype around generative AI, learning from the genuine progress that has been made while theorizing about, experimenting with, and implementing new approaches to problems that have been lost in the hype.

Role and Responsibilities

Founding Research Scientists will lead After Thought’s research efforts by identifying challenges within After Thought’s research mandate~~, ideate and conceptualize solutions, and assisting in experimentation and implementation of novel approaches.~~

Because we're still early-stage, your intellectual contribution will play an outsized role in shaping and executing the research strategy of the company as well as its impact on the field of AI and on the world.

It's important you demonstrate the ability to originate novel, sophisticated, and scalable solutions to fundamental problems, synthesize and incorporate advances in the state-of-the-art, and communicate effectively with others.

In this role, you'll be asked to:

  • Brainstorm novel solutions to fundamental problems within After Thought’s research mandate

  • Keep up with state-of-the-art advancements in academia and industry

  • Quickly implement and iterate on proofs-of-concept

  • Communicate ideas to research engineers and assist in implementation
