As a Senior Robotics Engineer at Tortuga, you’ll learn the ins and outs of our full robotic stack - controls, mechanical, electrical, software, computer vision and machine learning - so that you can rapidly diagnose and help to fix problems as they happen, or even before they happen. You’ll work within the operations teams to prepare robots for deployment, to run advanced R&D tests and experiments, and to support our growth efforts broadly. When in the field, you’ll understand deeply what our customers need, and how we might need to tweak our operations or tech stack to meet those needs.

You’ll help maintain our robot fleet, performing mechanical and electrical fixes and maintenance. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced, flexible, and energized startup environment. What you’ll do:

  • Work as part of our fast-moving operations team to identify and track issues, capture critical data, and rapidly problem solve solutions across operations, controls, software, and hardware

  • In conjunction with engineering, develop ideas and fixes that can improve our robots uptime and productivity in the field

  • Act as tech liaison between field ops team and Denver HW, SW, Data/ML, Ops on matters related to tech

  • Make significant direct engineering contributions in collaboration with, and mentorship from, experts and specialists, with meaningful independence.

  • Manage new releases

  • Track and report impact of change

  • Suggest solutions

  • Manage track retrofits

  • Identify issues new and unknown

  • Maintain and improve Maintenance KPIs for the CA team

  • Represent the CA team in team initiatives related to Fleet Health and Maintenance projects.

  • Work and maintain the robots at an outdoor farm environment (no office or mechanical shop is established yet).

  • Help build and maintain the future robot workshop and office as we scale up.

What we’re looking for:

  • Required: B.S. Engineering or relevant degree, with exposure to a variety of engineering disciplines, Masters degree in similar disciplines preferred

  • Required: At least four years of professional work experience

  • Required: Exceptional ability to learn, troubleshoot, and problem-solve across engineering disciplines (CS, EE, ME, EE)

  • Required: Exceptional communications ability, in engineering and English

  • Preferred: Prior experience with robotic applications and/or computer vision and machine learning

  • Nice to have: Experience with Python or C++, ROS, and/or issue-tracking software (e.g. Jira); fluent in Spanish

The base salary range below represents the low and high end of our wage range for this position. Actual wages may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to experience, education, responsibilities, and regular and/or necessary travel. The range listed is just one component of Tortuga’s total compensation package for employees.

Santa Maria and Nipomo, CA base wage range: $82,000 - $122,000 per year.

Your principal place of work will be at the customers’ farm in Nipomo, CA. You may be required to travel to Denver and the United Kingdom, as shall be necessary for the performance of your role and responsibilities.
