What we do
ParadeDB is building an alternative to Elasticsearch built on Postgres. We develop Postgres extensions to enable Elastic-level full-text search and analytics in Postgres via Tantivy and Apache DataFusion.
Our mission is to free companies from Elastic's bloat and cumbersome ETL pipelines. Our customers enjoy lower downtime, lower costs, higher engineer satisfaction, and real-time consistency between their OLTP and search/OLAP stacks.
We're a small, ruthlessly focused team of experienced engineers committed to fostering an inclusive and fun work environment. Our team is distributed between NYC and LA. We maintain a flat structure, have strong investors, and have lots of room for growth.
What we want
We're looking for a database internals engineer to join our team full-time. The ideal candidate should have:
A solid foundation in data systems/internals
Experience working with databases (bonus points for Postgres expertise)
Strong background in full-text search systems and/or data analytics/big query engines
Proficiency in systems programming with C++/Rust/Zig (bonus points for Rust)
Familiarity with Tantivy and/or Apache DataFusion is a plus
We're seeking someone creative, independent, and excited by difficult technical challenges who can teach us as much as they learn from us. The ideal candidate will bring thoughtful opinions to the team, be excited to engage with and learn from customers, and be willing to wear many hats.
What you want
You want to be part of the core team of a fast-growing infrastructure startup
You want to wear many hats and interface directly with customers
You’re passionate about the Postgres ecosystem, databases, search technologies, and/or data analytics
You’re excited about diving deep into the internals of Postgres, Tantivy, DuckDB, Apache DataFusion, and more
You believe in open-source and want to contribute to building a sustainable open-source company
You want autonomy over your work and the opportunity to make impactful design decisions
What you've done
You’ve contributed to open-source data systems projects (bonus points for Postgres, Tantivy, or Apache DataFusion), or have prior experience working on complex data systems in Rust
You have prior experience at a small, high-performing startup as an ex-founder or early engineer
You have architected data system(s) focusing on performance, scalability, and maintainability
You have optimized and debugged complex systems using profiling tools
Overall, you’re smart, willing to work hard, communicative, and open to learning about any service or framework you may not have worked with before
What you'll do
Develop and optimize ParadeDB extensions by writing Postgres APIs in Rust via pgrx
Develop and interface with the internals of Tantivy, Apache DataFusion, DuckDB, or related projects
Design and implement efficient data structures and algorithms for search and analytics functionality
Optimize query performance and resource utilization
Develop and maintain documentation, including API references and user guides
Contribute to technical writing, product demos, and content marketing
Engage directly with our customers and open-source community on GitHub, Slack, and email
Help shape ParadeDB's product roadmap and technical direction
