In the near future, we’re bringing spontaneous discovery to online shopping through a consumer marketplace. Our company was started in 2021 by top investor and operator, Keith Rabois, and is backed with $150M+ from investors such as Atomic, Founders Fund, General Catalyst, Khosla Ventures and Lux Capital.

At OpenStore, our data science team combines machine learning with expert human judgment to generate innovative recommendations that will revolutionize the ecommerce shopping experience. We’re looking for a Senior Data Scientist to own the Recommendation Systems function at OpenStore. Our ideal candidate is a sharp, thoughtful, creative, and collaborative problem solver, who enjoys identifying high-impact opportunities and building data science frameworks to capture their value. In this role you will iteratively build out and upgrade the Recommendation Systems models and deploy them through close collaboration with engineers.A core thesis to OpenStore is the ability to provide a serendipitous and delightful online shopping experience. This is only possible through a state-of-the-art, innovative, and customizable recommendations engine.

OpenStore has a unique model where it acquires and operates dozens of individual direct-to-consumer Shopify brands. Data is core to the OpenStore strategy. We’re stitching together granular Shopify sales records, product characteristics, customer features, bank statements, ad placements, web traffic, and more to construct a detailed view into a vast array of digital merchants and their audiences.

What You’ll Do:

  • Evaluate model performance and iteratively improve these models

  • Work closely with Engineering and the business teams while designing and executing the vision

Who You Are:

  • You care about tangible results. You will break through walls in order to deliver impact with high agency.

  • You are curious. You like to independently research the current ecosystem of methods and algorithms in order to bring new ideas to the table.

  • You thrive in fast-paced environments. You will iterate with engineers, analysts, and business teams to focus on high impact work and deliver quickly.

  • You are analytically rigorous. You have a deep bias towards using data and analyses to drive decisions.

What You Have:

  • Strong Python and SQL skills

  • Strong machine learning skills

  • Comfort with basic linear algebra and statistics - especially in relation to evaluating and building machine learning models

  • Comfort with machine learning libraries: pytorch, tensorflow, JAX, sklearn, etc.

  • Experience developing recommendation models

  • Strong communication and ability to present results from complex research in a cohesive, precise, and succinct fashion

  • Experience in an engineering-rich environment

  • 4+ years of prior Data Science experience

  • Building and shipping mindset over an academic research mindset
