This role is for specialists: practitioners who have mastered one of the verticals below, built real expertise through years of client work, and are ready to put that knowledge to work in a new way. You'll handle client matters in your field, and you'll also help build the institutional infrastructure that makes everyone around you sharper — reviewing and improving form agreements, developing precedent libraries, and training attorneys who benefit from what you know. About General Legal, Inc.
About the Role
We're looking for attorneys who have spent their careers going deep — not broad.
If you're the kind of lawyer who genuinely loves the craft of your specialty, keeps up with every regulatory development, and finds real satisfaction in teaching others what you've learned, this was built for you.
The Verticals
We are hiring for specialists in one (or more) of the following areas:
- Data Privacy & Security — GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, cross-border data transfers, privacy program counseling, DPAs, incident response
- Financial Regulatory — banking and lending regulation, payments, FinTech, broker-dealer, investment adviser, BSA/AML compliance
- Healthcare Regulatory — HIPAA, FDA, federal and state healthcare compliance, digital health, clinical research, reimbursement and coverage
- Employment Law — federal and state employment compliance, restrictive covenants, executive compensation, workplace investigations, HR counseling
What You'll Do
Client Work
- Advise clients on matters within your specialty, providing guidance that reflects current law, real-world practice, and seasoned judgment
- Review and negotiate agreements with material regulatory or compliance dimensions
- Serve as a trusted subject matter resource for both clients and internal attorneys on questions in your field
Knowledge Development
- Review, revise, and improve form contracts and standard documents within your practice area
- Build and maintain precedent libraries that reflect current best practices
- Develop training materials and lead sessions for other attorneys who encounter your subject matter in the course of their broader work
- Contribute to internal knowledge databases with practical, usable guidance — not just legal citations
What We're Looking For
- J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar membership in good standing (relevant specialty certifications a plus)
- Deep, focused experience in one of the four verticals above — ideally with a track record that includes top-tier firm work, a leading in-house role, or a regulatory agency background
- Encyclopedic knowledge of your field, and the kind of current awareness that comes from genuinely caring about it
- Real enthusiasm for teaching and knowledge-sharing — you're not protective of what you know, you want to multiply it
- Comfortable working with attorneys across experience levels, from first-year associates to senior partners
- Clear, confident communicator who can translate regulatory complexity into practical guidance
Engagement Options
We recognize that the best specialists don't always fit a standard mold. This role is open to:
- Full-time employees seeking a primary position
- Part-time employees looking for meaningful, substantive work at reduced hours
- Contract arrangements for specialists who prefer to maintain an independent practice
Compensation is pro-rated for part-time arrangements. All engagement types are eligible for the same quality of work, access, and integration with our team.
Why This Role
The best specialist attorneys often find themselves doing work that underutilizes what they actually know, buried in generalist matters, isolated in a narrow advisory function, or constantly starting from scratch because there's no institutional memory to build on.
This role is different. You'll spend your time on the work you're actually expert in, with the added dimension of shaping how that expertise lives in the organization long after any individual matter is closed.
We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
Salary
$200,000 - $300,000 per year
